Karol Mikina December 21, 2021 Share December 21, 2021 Hey everyone, It is common problem but I can't figure it out. I tried a lot options to make it right but didn't work so I am here. My monitor is BENQ SW 270C and calibrated with X-Rite i1Display pro. The colors of my footage after upload on YouTube are washed out. I export it as mp4 h.264 Rec.709, gamma 2.4 and tried with Auto Levels / Full Levels and Video Levels - the results are always the same. If I use VLC for preview and it looks same like in Davinci but if I use MPC-BE it's washed out. I beg you for help.
Kurt Riddell December 22, 2021 Share December 22, 2021 (edited) Hey Karol, This is a fairly common question so smarter people than I have answered it online. The internet, windows/mac are gamma 2.2 instead of gamma 2.4. This is causing the difference in your viewing. There a variety of ways to interpret and deal with this change within resolve before exporting. A quick google and I found this article which seems to cover the basics well: https://mixinglight.com/color-grading-tutorials/gamma-2-2-vs-gamma-2-4-davinci-resolve/ It has also been covered on here and other forums many times. Hope that helps, Kurt Edited December 22, 2021 by Kurt Riddell
Marc Wielage December 27, 2021 Share December 27, 2021 Read these: "Grading for Mixed Delivery: Cinema, Home, and Every Screen in Between" by Cullen Kelly https://blog.frame.io/2019/10/14/grading-mixed-delivery/ "How to Deal with Levels: Full vs. Video" by Dan Swierenga https://www.thepostprocess.com/2019/09/24/how-to-deal-with-levels-full-vs-video and "A Deeper Look at Consistent Color with QuickTime Tags From Resolve To YouTube & Vimeo on Wide Gamut Apple Monitors" by Dan Swierenga https://www.thepostprocess.com/2020/07/17/color-on-mac-displays-from-davinci-resolve-to-the-internet-with-quicktime-tags and I think they cover the issues and the solutions very well. Understanding color management is also helpful: "Color Management for Video Editors" https://jonnyelwyn.co.uk/film-and-video-editing/colour-management-for-video-editors/ My simple method: always export a second or two of SMPTE color bars at the very head of the project, and then check them on scopes in whatever player you're using to see how it looks. If there's a shift (video level or hue or chroma), you'll see it very quickly in bars. Note that the same image will look different on different browsers, different operating systems, different laptops, and different desktop displays. It's even worse when the displays are not calibrated. Sound has similar issues.
Karol Mikina January 6, 2022 Author Share January 6, 2022 Hey Marc and Kurt! Thank you for all your answers. I will read everything. The problem was inside my Nvidia settings. Tonal range was set to 16-235. I chaned it to full 0-255 and everything works perfectly right now.
